Behind the Sail

Once again, I managed to hit the trail head early enough to be rewarded with this gorgeously shadowed view of "The Sail", one of Sedona's many iconic rock formations, and a personal favorite of mine. This was painted on a gorgeous Spring morning with the sun just rising behind the rocks. The deep shadows moved all too fast, pushing me to paint quickly to capture the stunning deep violets and blues. I can't get enough of the contrast with the red/golden rocks and deep grey/blue greens of the desert highlands. Painted onsite, alla prima, at a teeny tiny trailhead I promised not to divulge. But I bet you can find it, if you look. One of my most favorite Sedona views.
